Letters to Delawareans on Acts of Hate
Dear Delawareans,
The murder of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis has elevated the deep racial divisions and tensions across our country with, once again, countless acts of intolerance, inequities, injustice, and discrimination upon our nation’s conscience. We deplore the legal system’s failure to respond to the long history of police violence against Black Americans. We need to bring about deep and lasting change and take action now.
The Delaware Human and Civil Rights Commission is committed to creating a culture that fosters positive individual and community relations among Delawareans. Together, Delawareans can turn the suffering, anger, and fear of the present into a more “just” future for all our residents. Hence, we are re-affirming unequivocally our commitment to address the pain caused by injustice and inequity and to uproot and combat systemic bias and racism in Delaware, “The First State.”
The Commission understands the need to organize and act immediately. As part of our action plan, we intend to press the Governor’s Office to reinstate the Governor’s Council on Equal Employment Opportunity (GCEEO), to ensure accountability at all levels in the State’s hiring and Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity (AA/EEO) processes. As residents of Delaware, we all must have a voice in this process!
In order to build a broader coalition to provide education and outreach, we will continue to work with our community partners and to identify new ones. We welcome all Delawareans to attend our monthly meeting(s) to share your ideas and help fulfill our common mission.

Dear Delawareans,
The troubling reports of hate crimes, violence and discrimination against members of the Asian Pacific American (AAPI) community in the United States is disturbing and offensive. Throughout the country, Asian American have been verbally harassed, physically assaulted, injured, maimed and in several horrific incidents, some innocent victims have lost their lives due to this senseless violence.
The Delaware State Human Relations Commission (SHRC) condemns the attacks on Asian Pacific Americans and calls on all Delawareans to stand up against hate, racism and violence in all its forms. The U.S. has a long history of anti-Asian racism, and the derogatory and inflammatory language referring to the coronavirus (COVID-19) during the past year has restoked the flames of hate and caused immeasurable harm to the members of the Asian American community. Whether due to race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, discrimination is a moral wrong and an illegal offense.
Hate has no place in our state.
